Writing choices that hurt to pick
Every branching story lives or dies on one moment: the playerโs thumb hovering over an option they donโt want to pick โ but know they should.
The choice is the story
In linear fiction, tension comes from what the character does next. In interactive fiction, tension comes from what you are willing to do next. That shift changes everything about how you write a scene.
A good choice isnโt between a right answer and a wrong one. Itโs between two things the player wants that canโt both be true.
Writing the hover
When I write a dialogue branch, I try to imagine the three seconds before the tap. If the player picks instantly, the choice was too easy โ decoration, not drama. The goal is the hover: that small held breath where the player realizes the story is about to become partly their fault.
Thatโs the feeling Iโm chasing in every chapter of Phone Text Simulator.
